Vampire Knight ED - Still Doll [Wakeshima Kanon]

The Tracks

1. still doll
2. Kuroi Torikago
3. still doll (Orgel Version)

The Review

I absolutely love the ED for Vampire Knight so I had to pick up this single. The song is such a departure from the usual j-pop-ness that is the norm, being a dark haunting classical ballad with strong emphasis on the srings particularly on the deeper cello. And amazingly it is in 3/4, such a demented feel of beat for us being so used to 4/4.

This was a rare occasion that I really wanted a karaoke version on the singles, as the instrumental alone would have been a great atmospheric track. Instead we get an orgel arrangement of the ED which is extremely haunting. There is even a small section that the key is rewound and the song continues with heightened energy, which I thought was a lovely detail to add.

The other song, Kuroi Torikago is a fast paced gothic piece with more classical influences, pulling in a creepy feel which I loved. Perfectly compliments the slower paced march of still doll. I absolutely loved this single and my last.fm account will obviously reflect that. XD

I haven’t had a chance to look into Wakeshima Kanon’s other works but I hope it is more like this single, and this wondrous musical style was not done specifically for the anime alone. The OP comes out soon which I look forward to, being the song I always sing along to. Vampire Knight has truly caught me as I continue watching the whole times from OP to ED without skipping any credits.

The Score: 9/10

Tower of Druaga 09 - Death Of A Party Member

Wow, this totally went over my head without me realising it was out. This was a good development episode with everyone being mixed from their usual groups. The ones to note being Fatina lightly and Ahmey’s past in the Uruk army. The pace is really starting to pick up with the obvious villain showing a bit of their machination, and killing off Kally for it, with Utu and Koopa barely escaping.

From here on out, it may be safe to assume that it is just going to get more serious. Also, the ghost that follows Neeba around has been saying some disturbing things about Kaaya betraying them all. What is her past and secret? Kaaya is hiding plenty of things obviously. This week, I will try to watch it as it comes out… hopefully. My routine has been really messed up with last week’s break.

Vampire Knight 09 - Because We Needed A Loli Vampire

And apparently yuri too. Not that I am complaining. Vampire Knight continues to top itself as a hot and steamy vampire drama, which I absolutely cannot get enough of. From the last episode, a new vampire was hinted at and now she is at the school and Maria shows a striking resemblance to the one who sired Zero and killed his family, enough to set Zero off enough to almost kill her on sight. It makes some sense since she is related.

Maria does show an unhealthy fixation on Zero and more so on Yuuki. There were times when I thought Yuuki would have been bitten yet again, but by her. Zero however is extremely weary of her, especially because of the resemblance thing. We find out some more about the one who sired him, being an insane pureblood called Shizuka. Zero does suspect that the reason no one knows where she went is that she changed forms. We find out that there is many abilities that pure bloods may have that not even the higher up vampires may know about.

I liked Aidou this episode with his much more mischievous side making Yuuki’s life harder with the jealous fan girls. Aidou also seems to have suspicions about the new transfer, Maria, who does pull off a way too arrogant aura in the presence of the other vampires and seems to float when she jumps. This could just be her unique ability though.

The big reveal is her servant/blood-bag who looks very much like Zero, possibly he is the supposedly dead brother. How he is together with Maria brings questions to how close Maria is to Shizuku really. I wish the next episode preview was more than just a title, because I am already enticed enough.

The ED single came out a while ago, and the OP soon. I love both of these so much, maybe I will get back to some music review.

So I Marathoned Nodame Cantable

Made it all the more enjoyable

Watching new series at an episode a week pace is alright, but I love getting my hands on a series released a while ago which I have never seen before and sitting down for a day or two and just watching it all. A good anime marathon is one of my favourite ways to use two days and I couldn’t have picked a better series than this I think.

It is a weird concept, a show about aspiring musicians and I wonder how this made it as a manga considering how half of the charm of the series came from the music. For one, I love classical music and another for five years of my life I was a violinist and pianist practicing to get better and performing so I couldn’t help but lose myself into the story and the music. And boy did I lose myself in the music. It has been a long while since I have listened to a large amount of classical music. I felt like I was a music student all over again before I left humanities to pursue qualifications in the sciences.

The other half of the charm of the show has to be the characters, especially Chiaki and Nodame. Chiaki is just so straight faced and dedicated, and it was a pleasure to see him mature as a conductor, becoming kinder and more nurturing to his orchestra. I remember one Conductor we had who was like Chiaki was to begin with, one of the cellists cried. Chiaki near the end reminded me of some of the fonder conductors I worked with -  demanding and inspiring.

Nodame is just an extremely bright and hilarious character, needing so much care from Chiaki. Her love for Chiaki just made it all the more funny. Her approach to her instrument kind of reminded me of myself, being so dedicated at times and lazy on it depending on you whim, but then again like me, she didn’t have the Piano as her final goal. I remember at times almost bleeding and crippling myself practicing the piano and violin (arguably I enjoyed the violin more) and at times, I tried to avoid my teachers and finding excuses not to practice. I really couldn’t play unless I myself was motivated. The last few episode with her trying so hard to win the competition and deciding to go to Paris to study had me uplifted the whole time. I loved it.

And this thrill of goodness doesn’t have to end even though it is over, as there is another season coming before the year is out. I so cannot wait, as this has become one of my absolute favourites.

Macross Frontier 09 - A Little More Klan

But I would prefer a lot more Klan. So we got a Micheal centric episode, exploring his past and developing his character. The subject was friendly fire, which I found pretty intense. It is somewhat harsh how Micheal’s sister was lead to suicide over this matter though, but thankfully Micheal was able to get over it sniping the target successfully without killing Alto (always a good thing) although not good enough it seems as the target still had enough time to destroy the nest and escape.

I like the other side of Klan showed this episode, the more vulnerable side that slapped the hell out of Micheal in a mech (interesting scene when you think about it) when we was being very callous with his words. I want some more development between them, a bit more about their past as they seem to have known each other since childhood. Also, I wouldn’t say anything if he really pursued her in her mincloned form.

Damn bastard… Let something resolve. Ranka has seen/met him twice now with nothing come out of it. He does seem to be on orders though, against the guys from Frontier, ordered to destroy the nest before they could capture and study it. Lots of cool action and more dog fighting (got to love those missles) so I can forgive all this torturing-like slow development in this area. There was surprisingly little Ranka and Sheryl this episode… I do look forward to next week’s episode as they will probably be back to their old amount of screen time.

Also, I forget the guy’s name but I must say, I like him even more for his proformance this episode, talking down Ranka’s manager. XD

Kurenai 08 - The Pace Finally Picked Up

Let me get this straight. I love Kurenai, I love it’s slice of life-ness and the wondrous characters make it so worth it but the pace was slower than Darker than Black, but pulled itself off so much better. Now however, the plot is thickening (and it was quite thick before) and now we will probably see a big change of scene away from the area we just got used to. I loved the bit where Shinkuro was surprised attacked by the two guys trailing them. This was such a cool scene for me as there was no stop, it was a relentless press much like what a real fight would be. No time to even state why you were there in the first place. He could have been really hit to a pulp if Yayoi didn’t step in and scare them off. So Murasaki’s family know where she is now and the apartment where all the fun happened is no longer safe - I really look forward to see where they go next.

Also, I love Murasaki calling Shinkuro a Lolicon. Tamaki influencing Murasaki is one of the better points of the show. XD

Obligatory Loot Post

So yeah, I said I was at the London Anime Expo this Saturday where I met Ruki, nice bloke. One of the single most fun things to do at the Expo was to check out the many cosplays and try to name the most, compared to whoever you were going with. I saw some cool cosplay, like the Power Rangers, Optimus Prime, Kamina and Simon (there were a few surprisingly, some were good, but some were just rubbish) and we saw a brilliant Shana, she was even loli. Ruki admits that he wanted to stalk her. And he calls me a lolicon! I can’t imagine what he would do if he met Aria cosplayers. Anyways to the bulk of what I did, I walked around and bought stuff. The manga turnout was poor and most of the series I wanted were missing the crucial volume I needed. I also broke my figure virginity. Have a guess what it i, you’ll see at the end.

On the manga front, I only bought three which is a pitiful amount for my usual manga buys but like I said the selection was poor. I did have my eye on the whole set of Rozen Maiden though. Sadly, I couldnt find more DearS, Busou Renkin, Bleach (no one stocked 19 but they all had 20 orz) or air gear of the volumes I needed. And in the end, the ones I did buy, School Rumble Vols 6-7 and Negima 15 weren’t even UK releases from Tanoshimi (The British arm of Random House as opposed to the US’ Del Ray) and Delray releases. Man, I just contributed to the Grey Market.

Apart from so I got two nice posters, a Tsubasa Chronicals one and a Code Geass one (lol, even subconsciously I covered up Suzaku). Kind of a rip off that they were so expensive though. And seems like every Expo, I bought another Gundam. Not just any Gundam though.

This has been a model I have sorely wanted for the last two years and have just never seen in stock any time I was at the Expo. I saw it once but it was snatched up before I got there with some money. After such a long time, wanting this beautiful looking Wing Gundam Ver. Ka I can’t help but appreciate it more and cannot wait to start working on this. I think I will leave it off to the summer after my finals to give it my full attention, maybe even go proper on it, painting and such. I was also reminded I had a Gundam that I hadn’t finished yet as well.

I have had this Strike Noir for going on a year, and I figured today I would work on it, so I needn’t worry about it when I worked on the Wing Gundam. I got more done in this day than a whole year. I remember seeing a lot of Gundam Unicorns at the Expo, which looked absolutely awesome. That may be next on my to buy list. Also, I saw many good Gundam 00 kits but after getting on MG, there is no way I can go for anything less. Wating on the Master Grades.

And the biggest buy of the day, for this pre painted resin kit of C.C. which I found absolutely gorgeous. It was an impulse buy, completely blowing my expected budget out of the water. I had originally planned to buy a Kallen, Rin and Shana (rin and Shana being cheap figures) but I bought this on seeing it. I can say, I am not regretting it.

Impulse buy stories; I saw one guy buy a huge and gorgeous Belldandy for £150 (about $300 I think) and asked on getting the box what series it was from. To buy such an expensive figure without even being a fan. Talk about impulse buy. So there was my loot, about as good as it is going to get on £110 and in the UK. I did see a Gurren Lagann kit I really wanted but it was £250…. very much out of my yearly budget for conventions. It would have been so worth it if I had that much money though.

This has changed my approach to buying now. I like figures and have always been keeping up with new releases and now I believe I will take the plunge and buy them regularly. With me being able to have an actual bank account and will be able to buy online in the next year, this could really boom.

Wagaya no Oinari-sama 06 - Cake!

Absolutely and hilariously awesome! Sakura is back and like episode 3, this has become one of my favourites! Ah, the delusions and thoughts on what could or is happening are quite funny but I do feel sorry for her in her pursuit of Noboru. I loved when she jumped the gun thinking the new girl (I forgot her name but she seems important by how she was tailing them at the end) in the whole Noboru/Kou/Kuu situation. Kou is still ever so straight-faced and it has me cracking up. Kuu was so whiny and demanding this episode, it was somewhat weird and annoying. I love how carelessly she lets important things slip and in the end, Sakura just got her memory wiped again. This show has fast become one of my favourites of the season, but the subbing is so slow. Maybe I should give in and watch it raw like some other shows I already do so for.

Code Geass R2 08 - I Feel Somewhat Ripped Off

Let me begin with the highlight of the episode - Kaguya-hime! Yeah, I know, thats my episode highlight for the last few consecutive episode but this episode had very little else to offer. Apart from the moe-licious Kaguya moment, I actually feel somewhat disappointed that this is how we leave things off while we break for a week.

Compulsory Anya screenshot. I am liking her and she is developing some, if ever so slowly and she makes some Suzaku scenes bearable. I love her line to Suzaku, ‘Are you a masochist?’ and her casually signing the execution orders in his steed. The Knights of Rounds since their introduction have not done that much, being held back by politics and rules, I want something like episode 6 again.

Nina is reintroduced, apparently working on a working version of her bomb. This has got to be important somewhere along the line because of how much time they used to foreshadow it here. She has gone a long way since table humping although I think Schneizel is probably using her, going to the trouble of funding this research.

And hurray for more Lloyd and Cecile. I guess Kallen is up to her fan service quota and Cecile takes over for a bit. I love the outfit although it makes little sense why she wore that. I like how relaxed Lloyd looks.

Alright, I liked Euphemia and all but with so much flash backing to her and remembering her is getting a little stale. I did like this scene with the candles for her showing again that Lelouch did generally care for her.

ANd the climax of the episode was nice and all but I couldn’t help think that I saw the same scene in Spartacus or V for Vendetta. For a while there, I did actually think he would abandon them all, but then again there wouldn’t be a good season left if that happened.

So a million zeros, the japanese just abandonned their home land and boarded this ridiculous iceberg ship which makes no sense to just introduce. I can’t help but allude Lelouch to Moses leading the masses in Exodus. The likely destination is China and I can’t help but wonder if this will go international. They showed some conflict in Europe before, (and apparently France is now in peace with Britainia) so we may get to see much more of the world and maybe more areas.

Lelouch’s plans have been getting more and more ludicrous each episode, especially in R2 and it comes to a point where it no longer seems like brilliant detailing but more like ad lib. This plan of his also was completely dependant on how well he knew Suzaku. I also believe he is being a bit too lax and not too subtle or careful anymore.

To which I believe Sayako recognizes him now. She got a lot of screen time just for being on the boat. Does she have significance here. Bah, I was left with a bitter feel that this episode didn’t deliver the same punch or even exciting fun I usually get with Geass. I desperately await the next episode.

Oh and sorry, this is late. As I said last week, I was in Kent all day (I can’t understand how Ruki can stand living there) playing in an American Football Game. To those interested we, the London Blitz beat the Kent Exiles 44-14. Pretty fantastic although it was an utter embarrassment when we actually let those two touchdowns from them happen due to a screwed up kick return. This score will really help us to get a playoff place. Next week is a home game so I should be able to get on this when it releases as normal.

London Expo - Anime Village

So yeah, I will be out most of the day to go to the London Expo where I again spent a lot of my money on porbably manga and more Gundam. This times is different in the fact I may be meeting up with some people which will be cool. May bring back pictures or such. Don’t expect a post today, and do expect a loot post soon. Man, I wish I actually sorted out that lagann cosplay… orz
