So I Marathoned Nodame Cantable

Made it all the more enjoyable

Watching new series at an episode a week pace is alright, but I love getting my hands on a series released a while ago which I have never seen before and sitting down for a day or two and just watching it all. A good anime marathon is one of my favourite ways to use two days and I couldn’t have picked a better series than this I think.

It is a weird concept, a show about aspiring musicians and I wonder how this made it as a manga considering how half of the charm of the series came from the music. For one, I love classical music and another for five years of my life I was a violinist and pianist practicing to get better and performing so I couldn’t help but lose myself into the story and the music. And boy did I lose myself in the music. It has been a long while since I have listened to a large amount of classical music. I felt like I was a music student all over again before I left humanities to pursue qualifications in the sciences.

The other half of the charm of the show has to be the characters, especially Chiaki and Nodame. Chiaki is just so straight faced and dedicated, and it was a pleasure to see him mature as a conductor, becoming kinder and more nurturing to his orchestra. I remember one Conductor we had who was like Chiaki was to begin with, one of the cellists cried. Chiaki near the end reminded me of some of the fonder conductors I worked with -  demanding and inspiring.

Nodame is just an extremely bright and hilarious character, needing so much care from Chiaki. Her love for Chiaki just made it all the more funny. Her approach to her instrument kind of reminded me of myself, being so dedicated at times and lazy on it depending on you whim, but then again like me, she didn’t have the Piano as her final goal. I remember at times almost bleeding and crippling myself practicing the piano and violin (arguably I enjoyed the violin more) and at times, I tried to avoid my teachers and finding excuses not to practice. I really couldn’t play unless I myself was motivated. The last few episode with her trying so hard to win the competition and deciding to go to Paris to study had me uplifted the whole time. I loved it.

And this thrill of goodness doesn’t have to end even though it is over, as there is another season coming before the year is out. I so cannot wait, as this has become one of my absolute favourites.

Macross Frontier 09 - A Little More Klan

But I would prefer a lot more Klan. So we got a Micheal centric episode, exploring his past and developing his character. The subject was friendly fire, which I found pretty intense. It is somewhat harsh how Micheal’s sister was lead to suicide over this matter though, but thankfully Micheal was able to get over it sniping the target successfully without killing Alto (always a good thing) although not good enough it seems as the target still had enough time to destroy the nest and escape.

I like the other side of Klan showed this episode, the more vulnerable side that slapped the hell out of Micheal in a mech (interesting scene when you think about it) when we was being very callous with his words. I want some more development between them, a bit more about their past as they seem to have known each other since childhood. Also, I wouldn’t say anything if he really pursued her in her mincloned form.

Damn bastard… Let something resolve. Ranka has seen/met him twice now with nothing come out of it. He does seem to be on orders though, against the guys from Frontier, ordered to destroy the nest before they could capture and study it. Lots of cool action and more dog fighting (got to love those missles) so I can forgive all this torturing-like slow development in this area. There was surprisingly little Ranka and Sheryl this episode… I do look forward to next week’s episode as they will probably be back to their old amount of screen time.

Also, I forget the guy’s name but I must say, I like him even more for his proformance this episode, talking down Ranka’s manager. XD

Kurenai 08 - The Pace Finally Picked Up

Let me get this straight. I love Kurenai, I love it’s slice of life-ness and the wondrous characters make it so worth it but the pace was slower than Darker than Black, but pulled itself off so much better. Now however, the plot is thickening (and it was quite thick before) and now we will probably see a big change of scene away from the area we just got used to. I loved the bit where Shinkuro was surprised attacked by the two guys trailing them. This was such a cool scene for me as there was no stop, it was a relentless press much like what a real fight would be. No time to even state why you were there in the first place. He could have been really hit to a pulp if Yayoi didn’t step in and scare them off. So Murasaki’s family know where she is now and the apartment where all the fun happened is no longer safe - I really look forward to see where they go next.

Also, I love Murasaki calling Shinkuro a Lolicon. Tamaki influencing Murasaki is one of the better points of the show. XD

Wagaya no Oinari-sama 06 - Cake!

Absolutely and hilariously awesome! Sakura is back and like episode 3, this has become one of my favourites! Ah, the delusions and thoughts on what could or is happening are quite funny but I do feel sorry for her in her pursuit of Noboru. I loved when she jumped the gun thinking the new girl (I forgot her name but she seems important by how she was tailing them at the end) in the whole Noboru/Kou/Kuu situation. Kou is still ever so straight-faced and it has me cracking up. Kuu was so whiny and demanding this episode, it was somewhat weird and annoying. I love how carelessly she lets important things slip and in the end, Sakura just got her memory wiped again. This show has fast become one of my favourites of the season, but the subbing is so slow. Maybe I should give in and watch it raw like some other shows I already do so for.

Code Geass R2 08 - I Feel Somewhat Ripped Off

Let me begin with the highlight of the episode - Kaguya-hime! Yeah, I know, thats my episode highlight for the last few consecutive episode but this episode had very little else to offer. Apart from the moe-licious Kaguya moment, I actually feel somewhat disappointed that this is how we leave things off while we break for a week.

Compulsory Anya screenshot. I am liking her and she is developing some, if ever so slowly and she makes some Suzaku scenes bearable. I love her line to Suzaku, ‘Are you a masochist?’ and her casually signing the execution orders in his steed. The Knights of Rounds since their introduction have not done that much, being held back by politics and rules, I want something like episode 6 again.

Nina is reintroduced, apparently working on a working version of her bomb. This has got to be important somewhere along the line because of how much time they used to foreshadow it here. She has gone a long way since table humping although I think Schneizel is probably using her, going to the trouble of funding this research.

And hurray for more Lloyd and Cecile. I guess Kallen is up to her fan service quota and Cecile takes over for a bit. I love the outfit although it makes little sense why she wore that. I like how relaxed Lloyd looks.

Alright, I liked Euphemia and all but with so much flash backing to her and remembering her is getting a little stale. I did like this scene with the candles for her showing again that Lelouch did generally care for her.

ANd the climax of the episode was nice and all but I couldn’t help think that I saw the same scene in Spartacus or V for Vendetta. For a while there, I did actually think he would abandon them all, but then again there wouldn’t be a good season left if that happened.

So a million zeros, the japanese just abandonned their home land and boarded this ridiculous iceberg ship which makes no sense to just introduce. I can’t help but allude Lelouch to Moses leading the masses in Exodus. The likely destination is China and I can’t help but wonder if this will go international. They showed some conflict in Europe before, (and apparently France is now in peace with Britainia) so we may get to see much more of the world and maybe more areas.

Lelouch’s plans have been getting more and more ludicrous each episode, especially in R2 and it comes to a point where it no longer seems like brilliant detailing but more like ad lib. This plan of his also was completely dependant on how well he knew Suzaku. I also believe he is being a bit too lax and not too subtle or careful anymore.

To which I believe Sayako recognizes him now. She got a lot of screen time just for being on the boat. Does she have significance here. Bah, I was left with a bitter feel that this episode didn’t deliver the same punch or even exciting fun I usually get with Geass. I desperately await the next episode.

Oh and sorry, this is late. As I said last week, I was in Kent all day (I can’t understand how Ruki can stand living there) playing in an American Football Game. To those interested we, the London Blitz beat the Kent Exiles 44-14. Pretty fantastic although it was an utter embarrassment when we actually let those two touchdowns from them happen due to a screwed up kick return. This score will really help us to get a playoff place. Next week is a home game so I should be able to get on this when it releases as normal.

Macross Frontier 08 - When The Budget Staff Take Over

After the monumental episode last week, it comes to no surprise how bad the animation got for this episode. And although there was no cool action, the episode was a light hearted school drama episode. Coupled with the bad animation, it was almost like watching Shuffle! again, except I like this more. XD

So Ranka now attends the same school as Alto. No need for her to hang around outside the gate desperately trying to contact him anymore. This I felt was a weird choice to just randomly do but I liked the potential that she would get closer to Alto. That was kind of ruined when Sheryl popped onto the scene, stealing the attention of everyone and making Ranka enter her down trodden state again. Also, Ranka in a carrot suit was weird and random, and it wasn’t more pronounced than then how DFC Ranka really is.

Dirty looking scenes are dirty. I really like Sheryl in this episode, showing off more of her personality from the date episode, being so childish at times. It is quite funny actually.

What really confuses me about her adoring fans is how courteous they are in giving her some space, to go about freely. It wasn’t until they hunted down her panties that they actually interacted so much. Hm, seems to show how much more they desperately want her underwear than her, which is sad but oh well, more for Alto-hime.

Again I say this, Sheryl is adorably cute at times, especially as she struggles to handle the flight suits smashing into walls… multiple times. What I found weird, was that she is missing panties and decides the clever idea is to hike her skirt up more.

And alto saves her as she riskes her life for her panties. Is it just me or the music hear sound like something from Pirate of the Caribbean. Alto does seem to have much more moments with Sheryl and Ranka is desperately falling behind.

I like this weird squirrel slug thing, to the level of Ranka’s phone and I like that a whole lot. Does it have any importance to the story on a whole I have no clue. I think that it came along with the bishie character from the last episode. He is actually there on Frontier and has met Ranka, confirming that their songs are the same. We are left hanging on what becomes of that though.

Finally, Sheryl follows the crowd and enrolls in Alto’s class as well. Now there is no escaping for Alto… ‘Poor’ him. I sure hope the next episode looks better…

Tower of Druaga 08 - Dragon!? Dragon You Say!?

Oh boy, could Jil be any more gullible. I think so! Kaaya is oh so cute and oh quick to take advantage of Jil (hilarious I may add) to get him to reach the top of the old 60 floor tower (the one in the original game) which was all kinds of awesome because he would die and have to come back. Also, everyone just took their turns leading him to his death, reviving him by inserting more credits. Was this game from back in the day that you had to go to arcades to play any video games? Gasp. I love how the combination to open the path to the tower was a joystick combo and how Jil was killed by the poison twice. Stupid and gullible I see. Well, on reaching the end, he does seem to have released the girl who was there where Gilgamesh defeated Druaga and I have a feeling this will be of great importance later on. The ghost lady seems to have confirmed that, noting that she has finally awoken. Next episode looks to be good with Fatina having to join Jil’s group shortly. Also, I have never noticed this before but there is a higher quality version on offer at youtube, when on the actual page, there is a link for HQ stream which looks pretty good actually. You may need to be logged in or subscribed to get this though.

Vampire Knight 07 - Delicious Vampire Drama

Yuuki was so cute back then

It’s been pretty much more of the same. More Vampire themed angst. More slowly developing back story and character development. More hot Yuuki biting. More intense drama. And I was loving each minute of it yet again.

So, a lot of the main character’s past have been elaborated on in the last few episodes. Zero’s relationship with his old teacher, the Vampire Hunter who saved him from a vampire before at the cost of his own eye, to which I must say he sports an awesome looking eyepatch. This is somewhat harsh on Zero’s part, being taught so horrifically the true terror of vampires and then having his family killed off by one, himself turned must be pretty traumatizing. And then to have your new hosts seem so close with a vampire, I can see why he attacked Kaname with that knife.

Yuuki also shows off her past, which a downwards spiral of overdependance and her increasing infatuation for Kaname, which is feeling so sickenly disgusting to me now. Their relationship needs to be resolved somehow, no matter whether they actually end up together or completely break ties. I hate this dancing around. Although what I do love is Yuuki trying to keep the fact that she had offered herself to keep Zero sane away from Kaname, and Kaname pretends he doesn’t know to appease her. He also doesn’t go and completely goes to tear Zero to shreds because of how Yuuki would feel. This was about the only point (apart from his earlier flashback scenes) that I had some ounce of a liking to Kaname. All the other times, I think he is a stiff prat. I do love the scene where Yuuki is totally freaked out when she spies Kaname drinking blood from a lady vampire.

With all this talk of peace between vampires and the humans, the night class are actually very hostile, especially in terms with anything to do with Kaname or to harm him. A pretty powerful scene was that one of them already had their hand at Zero’s neck in the time he had to draw his gun.

At the moment, I really want to see Yuuki grow up. She is too hung over Kaname, and totally missed the fact that Zero was the one to lay the blanket, thinking it was Kaname. Zero is actually in quite a pinch, rejecting the blood pills, he needs to feed on Yuuki to stay off the onslaughts of being a level E (obviously this shows there are levels D, C, B and As out there) while also having to face the idea that Yuuki would probably prefer Kaname doing that to her. Also, it was left hanging that the woman who turned him is still alive and on the loose.

The subs went completely unnoticed by me for nearly a month and I only caught up now but I am in dire need of weekly doses of this shoujo goodness now. The OP and the ED have my congratulations for being the only combo to make me want to watch the whole way through both (besides Gurren Lagann that I can remember). I love the OP and the ED is so deliciously haunting with an unusual (at least in this era) 3/4 beat. I love it. I wonder when the singles are out…

Kara No Kyoukai The Garden of Sinners 01

This just made my year! And there is even more coming! I can’t believe it has been since the December of 06 that I have been waiting for this moment and it lived up to every agonising moment I waited for it. I was tempted to actually read some of the novel in the interim but I didn’t, wanting to go into this series of films without any preconceived notions which may have been why I was completely blown away by this. The story was good and so intriguing I was literally on the edge of my seat. I want to know some more about these characters and the mysteries surrounding them.

I think what definitely made the whole thing was Shiki. Like Tsukihime’s Shiki, she too seems to have the Eyes of Death Perception, but here in the movie it looks all the more amazing with the dazzling glowing lines. The way she fought as well was so fluid and graceful perfectly animated. In fact, the whole of the animation on the movie was absolutely top notch.

The interplay between Shiki and Kokutou was wonderful. I like the chemistry between the two really. Shiki is also a rare Tsundere that I actually like. This is by far turning out even better than I expected and from the looks of what is coming, it looks to get even better! I cannot wait!

School Rumble San Gakki - PV Is Out And It Is Good

Hell, this is all I will look forward to now. The PV for the new School Rumble OVAs (released similarly in volume like Tsubasa Chronicles) is now streamable from the Official Site. It looks good, and it looks to cover quite a number of key chapters (fan appeasing ones) from the manga. This is going to be so amazingly awesome!

Thanks to Moetron for the heads up.
